Why do I need a Power of Attorney?

A Power of Attorney is a document in which you nominate someone you trust (your Attorney) to look after your affairs in the event that you are no longer able to do so yourself. In granting a Power of Attorney you get to decide who to appoint, the extent of your Attorney’s powers, and when those powers will come in to existence.
If you ever become unable to look after you own affairs, perhaps through old age or illness, and you had not formally appointed an Attorney, it effectively falls to the Court to decide who should take control of your affairs (your Guardian). You would not get to decide who was appointed as your Guardian and the process of appointing a Guardian is both lengthy and costly.
